The first session of camp is upon us! During this session students are learning to think like chemical engineers as teachers challenge them to design and test a recipe for play dough. Before jumping into the challenge, we wanted to get campers excited about chemistry, so we enlisted the help of the College of Charleston’s Alpha Chi Sigma-Chemistry Fraternity.
These CofC science students gave us a tour of the lab where freshmen chemistry students learn the basics, just like us. We learned about why chemists use a fume hood, how they protect themselves and others from dangerous chemicals, as well as about acids, bases, organic material, aqueous solutions, and flammability.
Finally, we were able to watch a chemistry demonstration! This reaction is known as Elephant’s Toothpaste, check out this link to do it at home and for the science explanation.
