This week 21 certified teachers from 7 Charleston County and 2 Berkeley County Elementary Schools participated in the first Elementary Engineers Teacher Training. Our trainer, Kristy Kidd from STEM Starters came all the way from University of Arkansas at Little Rock to prepare local teachers to confidently implement the Engineering is Elementary curriculum from the Museum of Science Boston.
Teachers discussed commonly held misconceptions students may have about technology and engineering.
Teachers dissected flowers looking at their various structures before designing a hand pollinator. Providing students with science experiences such as this will help them to better solve engineering challenges.
The Tower of Power activity can help students view failure in a positive light.
Have you ever thought about the purpose of packages or who designs them? Well these teachers did! They then designed their own packages to preserve and protect a plant while it was being shipped. Teachers experienced the units as both learners and teachers!
